Mein Interview mit dem Modellenland Magazin! Wenn du wissen möchstest, wie ich mit der Fotografie angefangen habe und woher ich meine Inspiration beziehe dann lies mal rein!

Erzähl uns etwas über dich
Mein Name ist Mascha Fekete, ich bin 26 Jahre alt und wohne in Wien. Ich habe drei Abschlüsse in Marktkommunikation und Werbung, Mediendesign und Medientechnik. Neben der Fotografie mache ich auch Grafik, Videoschnitt und leite Kurse. 2015 habe ich mich selbstständig gemacht und meine Firma Mascha Foto n Design gegründet. Da mein Vater Künstler und Universitäts Dozent auf der Kunsthochschule und meine Mutter Webdesignerin ist und einen Kulturverein leitet bin ich in einem sehr kreativen Umfeld aufgewaschen. Kreativität in meinem Leben ist mir sehr wichtig – ich lebe sie nicht nur in den oben genannten Bereichen aus, sondern singe und male auch viel.
Wie und wann bist du zur Fotografie gekommen?
Begonnen hat alles mit einer Schulfreundin als ich 14 Jahre alt war. Wir haben uns damals eigentlich mehr aufs Filmen konzentriert. Sie hat Drehbücher geschrieben, wir haben gleichzeitig gefilmt, selbst geschauspielt und ich war dann die jenige die mit Adobe Premiere die Filme geschnitten hat. Mein Vater hat mich damals auch sehr inspiriert, da er selbst oft mit Premiere und Photoshop zu tun hatte. Er hat mir die Programme damals beigebracht, so dass es mir überhaupt möglich war ganze Spielfilme mit 14 Jahren zu schneiden. Wir haben auch bei Filmfestivals mitgemacht und ich wurde sogar durch meinen Schnitt von einer Firma angeworben. Es war zwar unentgeltlich – hat aber Spaß gemacht. Auf jeden Fall hat es dann nicht lange gedauert, dass ich auch mit Photoshop angefangen wollte. Wir haben uns gegenseitig mit der kleinen Digitalkamera meines Bruders fotografiert und die Bilder direkt bearbeitet. Das hat mir so viel Spaß gemacht, dass ich dieses damalige Hobby perfektionieren wollte. Ich habe angefangen Baustellenleuchter zum Ausleuchten zu verwenden und mich in Photoshop weiterzubilden. Mit 16 Jahren habe ich dann meine erste Spiegelreflexkamera zum Geburtstag bekommen und mich kurz daraufhin zu einer Lehrausbildung als Medienfachfrau entschieden. Ich habe angefangen die Fotografie aber auch die Grafik immer ernster zu nehmen, angefangen mich immer intensiver damit zu beschäftigen und weiterzubilden. Und diese liebe hat dann nie geendet.
Was bedeutet dir die Fotografie?
Vielleicht ist es wie eine kleine Liebesgeschichte. Wir haben uns eine lange Zeit kennengelernt, es wurde ein Teil meines Lebens und boom war ich verheiratet. Haha! Jetzt im erst: Fotografie bedeutet für mich Freiheit mit Verantwortung. Ich habe die Freiheit meine Kreativität ausleben zu können, aber auch die Verantwortung dem Menschen gegenüber den ich fotografiere, denen die meine Arbeiten mitverfolgen und natürlich auch mir gegenüber. Ich möchte ja auch ein gewisses Level halten oder steigern. Es gibt mir dann auch ein bisschen das Gefühl von Stolz.
Beschreibe deinen Fotografie-Stil für unsere Leser.
Ich bin eine People-Fotografin – speziell für die Portrait Fotografie. Mein Stil ist eigentlich recht einfach zu definieren. Ich liebe die Perfektion – vor allem auch in der Retusche! Deswegen bin ich auch am meisten in der Beauty Fotografie zu Hause. Ich zeige weniger die wahre Seele oder den echten Charakter des Menschens in meinen Bildern, sondern möchte eher die äußerliche Schönheit festhalten. Außerdem liebe ich kräftige und klare Farben. Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass ich einen Farblook über das Bild lege, welcher die Farben verfälscht.
Woher bekommst du Inspiration?
Inspiration gibt mir eigentlich fast alles. Am meisten jedoch lasse ich mich von den Beauty Trends inspirieren. Ich bin dann auch viel in der Beauty Welt unterwegs und da achte ich dann natürlich als Beauty Fotograf auch viel darauf was ich aus den verschiedenen Hypes machen könnte. Ich versuche diese dann auch oft in kreativer oder gerne auch in übertriebener Form darzustellen. Und klar lasse ich mich Ansonsten auch, wie jeder andere Fotograf, von anderen Fotografen inspirieren.
Planst du im Voraus, wie dein Bild aussehen soll?
Auf jeden Fall! Ich konzipiere jedes Shooting – um dann natürlich auch die Visagistin und das Model im Vorhinein Briefen zu können. Ich plane dann auch, mit welchem Make Up wir starten, um auf diesem im Laufe des Shootings am Effizientesten aufbauen zu können. Oft haben wir nicht viel Zeit am Set und dann muss es schnell gehen. Viele Ideen hätten wir auch gar nicht umsetzten können, wenn wir diese nicht im Voraus geplant hätten. Natürlich lasse ich mir immer noch die Freiheit am Set dann etwas spontan zu ändern.
Studio, vor Ort oder beides?
Momentan bin ich eher im Studio. Ich möchte mich aber nächstes Jahr auch etwas mehr in die Natur wagen. Ich finde Natur, wie ein kleiner See, Felsen oder Grün im Hintergrund eines Fotos wirklich bezaubert.
Würden du dich selbst ein Hobby oder einen bezahlten Profi nennen?
Ich würde sagen beides! Ich meine ja, ich bin ein bezahlter Profi aber ich mache auch viele Shootings bei denen ich nicht bezahlt werde, um meine Kreativität ausleben zu können und mich weiterzubilden.
Dein größtes Shooting Erlebnis war und warum?
Das ist eine schwere Frage. Ich kann das auch gar nicht auf ein einziges Erlebnis beschränken. Ich würde eher sagen es sind die ersten Male. Das erste Mal im Studio, das erste Mal mit einem professionellen Model, das erste Mal mit einer Visagistin und das erste Mal als ich dafür bezahlt wurde. Ich denke das sind die Momente die ich nie vergessen werde.
Was war die größte Inspirationsquelle, die sich auf deine Arbeit ausgewirkt hat?
Ich habe mir viele Portraits von vielen Fotografen angesehen. Viele Bilder fand ich zwar sehr schön aber gestaunt habe ich immer bei derselben Art von Bildern. Bei der Beauty Fotografie – da wusste ich dann was ich machen wollte. Und um mich heute weiter zu entwickeln schaue ich natürlich auch was die anderen so machen und sehe wo ich mich dann noch verbessern könnte.
Nikon oder Canon? Lieblingsobjektiv?
Ich hatte immer schon Canon. Zurzeit nutze ich das 50mm Portrait Objektiv sehr gerne.
Welchen Ratschlag möchtest du einen Fotografen geben, der sein eigenes Unternehmen gründet?
Es gab eine Zeit da habe ich einfach Menschen fotografiert. Ich wusste nicht was ich mit den Bildern aussagen möchte und konnte mich nicht richtig weiterentwickeln. Der größte Ratschlag den ich damals bekommen habe, war mich zu spezielleren. Und zwar auch nicht allzu viele Themen. Ich wäre heute nie da wo ich jetzt bin, wenn ich mich nicht fix für die Beauty Fotografie entschieden hätte. Deswegen möchte ich diesen Ratschlag weitergeben „Spezialisiere dich auf einen Bereich und bilde dich in diese Richtung weiter. Es wird dir auch viel leichter fallen neue Ideen entstehen zu lassen!“
Was denkst du über unser neues Magazin?
Es ist eine tolle Möglichkeit sich gegenseitig kennenzulernen und zu präsentieren. Ich finde es immer spannend den Künstler hinter seinen Werken zu entdecken. Es ist auch eine schöne Plattform für Inspiration!

Can you tell us a little about you?
My name is Mascha Fekete, I am 26 years old and I live in Vienna. I hold three degrees, namely in advertising and market communication, in media design and media engineering. Besides photography I perform graphic design, video editing and I conduct workshops. 2015 I started freelancing and founded my own company Mascha Foto n Design. I did grow up in a very creative environment as my father lectures at an art academy and my mother is a web designer and directs an art association. Creativity means a lot to me – I do unfold my creativity in the abovementioned fields and also by often painting and singing.
How and when did you get into photography?
It all started with a school friend as I turned 14. We were very focused on film and video at this time. She wrote scripts, we both filmed, acted and then I edited the footage with Adobe Premiere. My father had inspired me as he himself then worked a lot with Premiere and Photoshop. He taught me how to use the programs enabling me to edit complete movies at the age of 14. We also participated at film festivals and I was even recruited by a company who appreciated my editing. Although it was work on a voluntary basis, I did much enjoy it. After these experiences it didn’t take me long to start learning Photoshop too. We took mutual photos of us with the small digital camera of my brother editing the images directly. That was so much fun that I decided to bring this hobby to perfection. Starting with refining lighting by using spotlights and further learning Photoshop. On my sixteenth birthday I received my first Single Lens Reflex camera and decided shortly thereafter to start my apprenticeship as media expert. I took photography and graphic design more and more serious and kept studying further. The beginning of a love that hasn’t ended till today.
What does photography mean to you?
Maybe it is like a small love story. We got to know each other for a long time, it became part of my life and boom we got married. Haha! But seriously: To me photography means freedom with responsibility. I have the freedom to live my creativity but also the responsibility towards the people which I photograph, who follow my works and of course also towards myself. As I do want to keep a certain level of perfection, if not increasing it. And it does give me some feeling of pride and fulfilment.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
I am a people photographer – with a focus on portrait photography. My style is easily defined. I love perfection – especially in retouching. As such I prefer beauty photography. I want to capture beauty. I also love strong and clear colours. It is very rare for me to use a colour look on my images, tampering with the original colours.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Almost anything can inspire me. But mostly I am inspired by beauty trends. I do a lot of research in the world of beauty and as a beauty photographer I seek to do the most out of the different hypes encountered. Which I then try to display in a creative manner, fancying exaggeration too. Obviously also I get inspired from other photographers.
Think you in advance what you want in the picture?
Absolutely! I plan each shooting thoroughly – in order to brief the make-up artist and the model. The planning also foresees with which make-up we start, enabling us to structure the shooting in the most efficient way. On the set we do not have much time, all has to go very quick. Many ideas would not have been implemented if they were not planned ahead. Of course I always allow the freedom of spontaneous changes on the set.
Studio, on location or both?
At the moment I am rather in the studio. But next year I plan to risk shooting more outdoors, in nature. I find nature enthralling as background of a photography – such as a small lake, a rock or just green.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I’d say both! Yes, I am definitely a paid professional, but I do also effect unpaid shootings to enjoy my creativity and to further train myself.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
For me this question is difficult to answer. I cannot limit the answer to a single experience. I’d rather say, the most memorable sessions are the first ones of their kind. The first one at the studio, the first one with a professional model, the first one with a make-up artist and the first time I got paid for it. These are the moments I will never forget.
What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?
I have watched many portraits of many photographers. Many images were very beautiful to me, but it was always the same kind of images that amazed me. Those in beauty photography – I then knew what I wanted to do. Today, in order to develop further professionally, I observe what others are doing, compare it and find what I can still improve.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
I always used Canon. At the moment I really enjoy the 50mm Portrait Lens.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
There was a time when I just took photos of people. I didn’t know what I wanted to say with my images and I couldn’t really develop myself further. The biggest hint I got at this time was to specialize on something. Not on too many topics. I would not be where I am today, had I not decided to go for beauty photography. This is why I would like to pass on this advice – „Get specialized on a theme and develop yourself further in this direction. It will then be much easier for you to create new ideas!“
What do you think of our new magazine?
It is a great opportunity to get to know each other and it is a great representation platform. I am always amazed by discovering the artist behind his or her works. And it is very inspiring!
